The publication Repainting Subway Art is the consummation of a tribute to the inventiveness and creativity of the original graffiti writers and photographers of the book Subway Art (Martha Cooper @marthacoopergram , Henry Chalfant @henrychalfant. Thames & Hudson, New York, 1984) and the worldwide graffiti movement they inspired for more than 40 years. One gifted Dutch graffiti writer, Tripl, has recreated and reinterpreted Subway Art, paying both homage to, and starting a dialogue with, the creators of the original book and graffiti as a whole.
40 years after the publication of Subway Art the critical, humorous, and respectful release of Repainting Subway Art is a fact. To the deepest layer and smallest detail Repainting Subway Art unveils the dedication, focus and work Tripl put into the re-enactment; from painting, to photographing to styling. With 92 pages more than the original book, bringing new words and images, the new release gives an in-depth view on the project as a whole.
The text has been (re-)written by Dr. Edward Birzin, author of the dissertation Subway Art(fact) (2019), What Do One Million Tags Signify? (2017) and Nov York (2002).
